Massachusetts small & family-owned businesses:
the state will pay for your team's training

If your company has 100 or fewer Massachusetts employees, you may qualify for up to 100% reimbursement on leadership, succession, and team training through the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund Express Program. Up to $15,000 back per year. Happier Office is an approved provider.

How it works

Apply before training starts, complete the session, then submit for reimbursement. The state typically pays out within six weeks. Most small business clients start with Project Management 101, Change Management for Senior Leaders, or Reworking Your Organization.

The problem most small businesses don't talk about

Traditional and family-owned businesses run on something most companies can't replicate: decades of relationships, institutional knowledge, and trust built one customer at a time. That's also exactly what makes a leadership transition so hard. The systems that worked under one generation often don't transfer cleanly to the next, and the team caught in the middle is usually the last to get any support.

Nationally, 70% of family enterprises fail to pass successfully to the second generation, and 88% fail to make it to the third. The research is consistent on why: 89% of leaders at organizations with proactive, structured succession planning say the leadership transition added new skills to the team, compared with just 59% at companies with informal processes.

The same pattern shows up with rapid growth, not just succession. A business that's run the same way for 20 years can hit a wall when it doubles in size or takes on a new kind of work. What worked at one scale stops working at the next, and nobody on the team was trained to manage that shift.

The Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund exists to help businesses like yours invest in that transition at little or no cost.

A note on Massachusetts's traditional business sector

Massachusetts has one of the highest concentrations of long-standing, family-owned businesses in New England, spanning manufacturing, retail, distribution, and trades across every corner of the state, from the North Shore to the Pioneer Valley. Many of these companies are now navigating their first or second leadership transition in a generation, often at the same time as real growth pressure from new markets or new competition.

The leadership and communication skills this training develops are built for exactly that moment: a team that knows how to do the work but hasn't been trained on how to lead through change.

What training is available for my small business?

These Happier Office courses are approved for reimbursement through the Workforce Training Fund Express Program:

  • Change Management for Senior Leaders: for companies navigating ownership transition, generational change, or a shift in how the business operates

  • Reworking Your Organization - Two Days to Efficient Teams: fixing the communication gaps and process breakdowns that show up as a company grows past what its original systems can handle

  • Business Operations & Quarterly Planning: building the operating rhythm that holds up as the team and the business scale

  • Emerging Leaders - 4-Week Training: developing the next generation of managers & leaders before you need them

  • Conflict Management & Resolution: managing the friction that surfaces when long-tenured staff and new leadership don't see eye to eye

  • Project Management 101: your introductory course to efficient planning, prioritization, delegation & on-time work.

Most family-owned business clients start with Change Management for Senior Leaders or Reworking Your Organization. Ask Robin what makes sense for where your company is right now.

What this looks like in practice

As of April 2026, every eligible Massachusetts business with 100 or fewer employees qualifies for up to 100% reimbursement on team training.

A 28-person manufacturing company in Worcester transitioning to second-generation ownership

Sends 4 senior managers to a change management workshop

Reimbursement: up to $3,000 × 4 people = up to $12,000 back

Out of pocket after reimbursement: potentially $0

A 50-person car dealership on the North Shore

Sends the full leadership team to a two-day Reworking Your Organization training.

Reimbursement: up to $3,000 per person, up to $15,000 total

A 10-person pizza shop in Watertown

Sends 2 junior employees to a manager training

Reimbursement: up to $3,000 × 2 people = up to $6,000 of training covered

What makes Happier Office different for local businesses?

This isn't a leadership theory course built for a tech company. Every session starts with a survey of your team, and the agenda gets built around what actually comes back. If the real issue is that long-tenured employees don't trust a new leadership structure, that's what we work on. If it's that the business has outgrown its informal way of operating, we go there.

Robin has worked with traditional and family-owned businesses across Massachusetts and New England, navigating exactly these kinds of transitions. She understands that the goal isn't to replace what's worked for decades; it's to give your team the tools to carry it forward.

How to Apply for the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund Express Program

The application is the same six-step process for every Massachusetts business: schedule your training, apply, get approved, train, then get reimbursed within about six weeks.

The rule that trips up companies most often: you have to apply at least 21 days before training begins. Plan ahead and the rest is straightforward. Robin will help you with scheduling.

Common questions from family businesses

We've never used a state grant before. Is this realistic for a company like ours?

Yes. The application is simpler than most grant processes, and there's no narrative or competitive review. You gather three documents, fill out a form, and wait for approval. Most clients find it takes about 10 minutes once documents are in hand, and the grant is awarded on a first-come first-serve basis.

Can we use this training during a leadership transition?

Yes, and it's one of the most common reasons that family-owned businesses work with Robin. Happier Office's Change Management for Senior Leaders course is built specifically for this kind of moment.

Do family members on payroll count toward our employee total?

Yes, as long as they're W-2 employees of the company.

Our business has been around for decades and hasn't changed much. Will this training actually fit how we operate?

That's exactly what the team survey at the start of every session is for. The training gets built around your actual operation, not a generic framework. Robin's job is to fit the training to your business, not the other way around.

What if our company is based outside Massachusetts but has a Massachusetts location?

You may still qualify if the employees being trained work in Massachusetts and your company pays Massachusetts unemployment insurance for them. Talk to Robin to learn more.

“As both the business owner and the frontline leader, I knew I needed to leverage support from an external expert to help drive my team to forward.  That's when I discovered Happier Office by Robin Cohen and her services. From the moment we began, it was clear that this experience was tailored to our unique needs and goals.  By the end of the workshop, we had not only bonded as a team, but also defined and solved a major workflow issue and this improved our overall function. The tools and strategies we gained have already made a noticeable difference in our projects, but solving our biggest workflow issue has made an immediate & measurable positive impact on my business. I strongly recommend Robin for any small business looking to enhance teamwork and operational efficiency. This experience was great for my team, and the ROI realized by Robin's method exceeded any expectation that I had going into this meeting.”
