Massachusetts tech companies:
the state will pay for your team's training
If your company has 100 or fewer Massachusetts employees, you may qualify for up to 100% reimbursement on project management, communication, and process improvement training through the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund Express Program. Up to $15,000 back per year. Happier Office is an approved provider.
How it works
Apply before training starts, complete the session, then submit for reimbursement. The state typically pays out within six weeks. Most Happier Office tech clients start with Strategic Planning or Project Management 101.
The problem most B2B & B2C companies don't talk about
Most tech companies scale headcount faster than they scale process. What works for a 20-person team will not work for a 50-person team, and definitely won't work for an 80-person team. Cross-functional handoffs get messy, goal-setting becomes inconsistent across departments, and the founders who used to be in every conversation suddenly can't be.
Inefficiency and missed deadlines are rarely a tooling problem. About 75% of cross-functional teams are considered dysfunctional, failing to meet at least three of five key performance criteria, including budget adherence, timeline compliance, and alignment with company goals. Most growing tech companies already have project management software, Slack channels, and dashboards. What's usually missing is the team training underneath all of it: how to run a goal-setting process people actually trust, how to hand off work cleanly between functions, how to manage up and down as the org chart gets more layers.
The Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund exists to help companies like yours invest in that layer at little or no cost.
A note on the Massachusetts tech market
Massachusetts has one of the strongest tech ecosystems in the country, anchored by Boston and Cambridge but extending across the Route 128 corridor and into the Pioneer Valley. Companies here range from early-stage startups working through their first scaling pains to established B2B and B2C companies managing distributed, hybrid, and fully remote teams.
The process improvement and communication skills these trainings develop are built for whatever your team is dealing with, and wherever you want to go next. Happier Office trainings empower fast-moving teams to establish shared systems that don't compromise speed.

What makes Happier Office different for tech companies?
Before founding Happier Office, Robin spent 10+ years leading operations & marketing for world-renowned brands, including AllTrails, ezCater, Wistia, and Vistaprint. This isn't theoretical training from another consultant; it's practical, pressure-tested guidance from someone who's actually sat in your seat.
Every session starts with a survey of your team, and the agenda is then built around the challenges your team faces. If the real issue is that work keeps stalling during cross-functional handoffs, that's what we address. If your org struggles to connect goals with actual day-to-day work, we'll dive in there. Process issues? Time to breakout the whiteboard and see what's going on.
How to Apply for the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund Express Program
The application is the same six-step process for every Massachusetts business: schedule your training, apply, get approved, train, then get reimbursed within about six weeks.
The rule that catches teams off guard: you have to apply at least 21 days before training begins. Plan ahead, especially around fundraising, product launches and busy season for more flexibility.
Common questions from startups & Massachusetts tech companies
We're fully remote. Does the training still work for a distributed team?
Yes. Happier Office sessions run effectively in person or live virtual. Live virtual training with an approved provider qualifies for reimbursement under the grant, while recorded or on-demand content does not. Note: the company needs to be headquartered in MA or pay into Massachusetts Unemployment Insurance to qualify for the grant.
Do contractors on our team count toward our employee total?
Only if they're on W-2 payroll. 1099 independent contractors do not count toward your employee total. While they're not technically eligible for the training, 1099 contractors are welcome to sit in, assuming you have enough W2'd employees to qualify.
We just raised a round and are scaling fast. Is now a good time for this?
Post-raise is a great time to invest in team alignment. Periods of rapid growth are exciting, but also challenging as that's exactly when process gaps surface. Getting ahead of process problems before the team grows is easier than fixing them after.
Can we train engineering teams, or is this just for go-to-market functions?
Yes, these trainings work for cross-functional teams and across the company. Many of the communication and process issues that show up in engineering, like unclear handoffs and inconsistent goal-setting, are likely the same ones showing up everywhere else.
Our firm is headquartered outside of Massachusetts, but we have employees in MA. Do we qualify?
You may. If the employees being trained work in Massachusetts and your firm pays Massachusetts UI for them, you're likely eligible. Ask Robin before assuming you don't qualify.
“From the moment we began, it was clear that this experience was tailored to our unique needs and goals. By the end of the workshop, we had not only bonded as a team, but also defined and solved a major workflow issue and this improved our overall function. The tools and strategies we gained have already made a noticeable difference in our projects, but solving our biggest workflow issue has made an immediate & measurable positive impact on my business. I strongly recommend Robin for any small business looking to enhance teamwork and operational efficiency. This experience was great for my team, and the ROI realized by Robin's method exceeded any expectation that I had going into this meeting.”

Ready to put this grant to work for your team?
Most companies that qualify for this program never use it. Not because it isn't worth it, but because nobody told them it existed. Now that you know, don't wait. Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
