Massachusetts law firms:
the state will pay for your team's training
If your firm has 100 or fewer Massachusetts employees, you may qualify for up to 100% reimbursement on project management, facilitation, and team communication training through the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund Express Program. Up to $15,000 back per year. Happier Office is an approved provider.
How it works
Work with Robin to find your training, then apply before training starts. Complete the session, then submit for reimbursement. The state typically pays out within six weeks. Most of our legal practice clients start with Conflict Management & Resolution or Change Management for Senior Leaders.
The training gap most law firms never address
Lawyers are trained extensively in the law. They're rarely trained in how to manage people. As senior associates become partners, they inherit the bigger cases and management responsibilities of paralegals and junior attorneys. While they've been training for years for the former, the latter tends to go by the wayside. No formal preparation and high-pressure demands create friction between attorneys, support staff, and partners with different management styles. That friction slows your team down, reduces your billable hours, and causes your team to quit.
The numbers prove it. The NALP Foundation found that associate attrition in 2024 reached 31% at small firms (under 100 lawyers), well above the 18% average attrition rate at larger firms. When you account for recruiting, hiring, onboarding & training investment, firms lose between $200,000 - $500,000 per departure.
Firms that are growing fast or bringing on new partners feel this acutely. The practice that worked well at 15 people doesn't always hold at 40, especially when folks on staff aren't trained to manage the shift.
The Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund exists to help practices like yours invest in closing the training gap at little or no cost.
A note on the Massachusetts legal market
Massachusetts has one of the largest concentrations of law practices in New England, from boutique firms in Boston's Financial District to regional practices serving clients across the Commonwealth. Many firms are navigating the same pressures at once: associate retention, partner succession, and the operational complexity of growing past a size where informal management still works.
The communication and leadership skills this training develops are built for exactly that environment: a team of highly trained specialists who were never trained to lead or manage each other.

What makes Happier Office different for law firms?
This isn't generic corporate leadership training. Every session starts with a survey of your team, and the agenda gets built around what's actually surfacing in the firm. If the real issue is friction between attorneys and paralegals, that's what we work on. If it's that partners manage their teams in three different, conflicting ways, we go there.
Robin has worked with law practices across Massachusetts and New England, navigating growth, leadership transitions, and the operational strain that comes with both. The goal is a team that communicates and manages as well as it practices law.
How to Apply for the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund Express Program
The application is the same six-step process for every Massachusetts business: schedule your training, apply, get approved, train, then get reimbursed within about six weeks.
The rule that trips firms up most: you have to apply at least 21 days before training begins. Reach out before you have a project kickoff or a principal departure looming and no runway left.
Common questions from law offices & defense firms
Do paralegals and support staff count toward our employee total?
Yes, as long as they are W-2 employees, and the company pays into Massachusetts unemployment insurance.
Can partners participate in reimbursed training?
Of course, and Robin often recommends it. Some of the most impactful training happens when partners & support staff are in the same room working through communication and process problems together.
Our firm bills hourly. Does the time spent in training cost us money?
The grant covers the training cost itself, not staff time, so most firms plan training around lighter periods. Robin will work with you to schedule at the best time for your firm.
We're a small practice, under 15 people. Is this worth pursuing?
Absolutely. Small teams often need the most help and have the fewest resources. A small firm sending 4 or 5 staff to training can still recoup $12,000 to $15,000. Even if you send 20% of your staff, what they learn will make a big impact on your day-to-day operations.
What if our firm has offices in multiple states?
You may still qualify if the employees being trained work in Massachusetts and the firm pays Massachusetts unemployment insurance for them.

Ready to put this grant to work for your firm?
Most practices that qualify for this program don't use it. Not because it isn't worth it, but because nobody told them it existed. Now that you know, don't wait.
