Massachusetts architecture & engineering firms: the state will pay for your team's training
If your firm has 100 or fewer Massachusetts employees, you may qualify for up to 100% reimbursement on project management, facilitation, and team communication training through the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund Express Program. Up to $15,000 back per year. Happier Office is an approved provider.
How it works
Apply before training starts, complete the session, then submit for reimbursement. The state typically pays out within six weeks. Most of our architecture and engineering clients start with Project Management 101 or our two-day Reworking Your Organization training.
The problem most architecture and engineering firms don't talk about
Your team is technically excellent. The friction isn't in the drawings. It's in the meetings that don't produce decisions, the client relationships that go sideways, the junior staff who don't know how to push back on scope creep, and the project managers who were promoted for their design instincts, not their people skills.
According to the AIA's 2024 Firm Survey, project management and business modernization are recurring priorities that firms identify in their own benchmarking. Yet most professional development spending goes toward technical and design continuing education, not PM skills. The gap is real, and it's expensive.
The scale matters here too: 75% of U.S. architecture firms have fewer than 10 employees. Which means that most firms are small enough to qualify for this grant, and large enough to have real team and PM challenges that aren't being addressed.
The Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund exists to help firms like yours close that gap at little or no cost.
A note on the Massachusetts architecture & engineering market
The Boston metro has one of the densest concentrations of architecture and engineering firms in the country, from internationally recognized practices in the Seaport and Kendall Square to established regional firms serving higher education, healthcare, and municipal clients across the state. Institutional clients like Harvard, MIT, Mass General Brigham, and the Commonwealth itself bring real project complexity: multi-stakeholder teams, long approval cycles, and high expectations for communication.
The communication, facilitation, and PM skills this training develops are especially valuable in that environment. Happier Office has worked with Boston-area firms including Schneeberger Collective Architecture & Design, and understands the culture of a design practice and what actually gets traction with architects and engineers.

What this looks like in practice
As of April 2026, every eligible Massachusetts architecture or engineering firm with 100 or fewer employees qualifies for up to 100% reimbursement on trainings.

Out of pocket after reimbursement: potentially $0
A 65-person engineering firm on Cape Cod
Sends 4 senior PMs to a conflict management and operations training.
As of April 2026, qualifies for 100% reimbursement.
Reimbursement: up to $3,000 × 4 people = up to $12,000 back
A 10-person boutique architecture studio in Boston's Seaport district

Reimbursement: up to $3,000 per person, up to $15,000 total
What makes Happier Office different for architecture firms?
Generic project management training is built for tech teams or corporate environments. It doesn't map onto the rhythm of an architecture or engineering practice: the OAC meeting, the design development phase, contractor coordination, the institutional client with 14 stakeholders and a 26-month approval cycle.
Every Happier Office session starts with a survey of your team. What comes back shapes the agenda. If your PMs don't know how to manage a scope conversation with a client, that's what we work on. If senior designers aren't delegating effectively to junior staff, we go there.
Robin has worked with architecture firms in Boston and across New England, including Schneeberger Collective Architecture & Design. She understands the culture of a design practice, and what actually gets traction with architects and engineers.
How to Apply for the Massachusetts Workforce Training Fund Express Program
The application is the same six-step process for every Massachusetts business: schedule your training, apply, get approved, train, then get reimbursed within about six weeks.
The rule that trips firms up most: you have to apply at least 21 days before training begins. Reach out before you have a project kickoff or a principal departure looming and no runway left.
Common questions from architecture & design firms
We work across multiple project sites. Does our staff still qualify?
Yes. What matters is that your employees are W-2 employees, and that the company pays into Massachusetts unemployment insurance. Your staff can work in the office or on project sites, eligibility isn't affected by where a project is located.
Can we train both our design staff and our project management staff together?
Yes, and Robin often recommends it. Some of the most impactful training happens when designers and PMs are in the same room working through communication and process problems together.
We're a small firm of only 12 people. Is this worth it for us?
Absolutely. A 12-person firm sending four staff members to training qualifies for up to $12,000 in reimbursement. For a small studio, that's training for 33% of your staff, for free. The application is easy and only takes about 10 minutes once documents are gathered.
Our firm is headquartered outside of Massachusetts, but we have employees in MA. Do we qualify?
You may. If the employees being trained work in Massachusetts and your firm pays Massachusetts UI for them, you're likely eligible. Ask Robin before assuming you don't qualify.
“From the moment we began, it was clear that this experience was tailored to our unique needs and goals. By the end of the workshop, we had not only bonded as a team, but also defined and solved a major workflow issue and this improved our overall function. The tools and strategies we gained have already made a noticeable difference in our projects, but solving our biggest workflow issue has made an immediate & measurable positive impact on my business. I strongly recommend Robin for any small business looking to enhance teamwork and operational efficiency. This experience was great for my team, and the ROI realized by Robin's method exceeded any expectation that I had going into this meeting.”

Ready to put this grant to work for your firm?
Most architecture and engineering firms that qualify never use this program. Not because it isn't worth it, but because nobody told them it existed. Now that you know, don't wait.
